The weather in Scotland is highly unpredictable, one of the reasons why it is a good idea to go with a guide on your first visit here. To get the most out of your day it is important to take the weather into account.

The best weather sites are MWIS for an in-depth mountain forecast and the Met Office for a great overall view including rain radar to show you where the rain has been and where it is heading!

When planning your day ask yourself the following questions.

Where is the rain coming from/where is it going?

It is often much drier in the east than in the west so a careful choice of destination can save you from getting seriously wet!

In what direction is the wind going to be – will it change during the day?

This is useful for planning in what direction to walk as it is much easier to walk with the wind at your back.

Is it safe?

If the forecast is for strong winds it is advisable to stay off the summits and exposed ridges. Low cloud also adds another difficulty, and unless you are a confident with a map and compass it is unwise to go up in adverse conditions.
